BARC Jetty Workers Rescued After Barge Stranded at Sea
Sources said the proposed jetty is being constructed to support the upcoming BARC campus in Anakapalle district
Visakhapatnam: Four contract workers stranded on a barge carrying soil-testing equipment off the Pudimadaka-Tantadi coast in Anakapalle district were rescued by the Coastal Security Police with the help of local fishermen on Thursday.
The workers were identified as Santhosh Kumar Goud, Nityananda Tarafdar, Kamaraj Goud and Dattaram Krushna Mahakal.
According to the Coastal Security Police, the workers, hailing from West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, were conducting seabed soil investigations for the construction of a jetty for the proposed Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) campus in Achyutapuram mandal when the incident occurred.
Officials said the ropes of the three boats towing the barge snapped due to rough sea conditions, leaving the workers stranded and unable to return to shore.
On receiving information, a Coastal Security Police team from Pudimadaka, led by Inspector S. Simhadri Naidu, launched a rescue operation with the assistance of local fishermen. All four workers were brought ashore safely without injuries.
Sources said the proposed jetty is being constructed to support the upcoming BARC campus in Anakapalle district. It will primarily be used to transport heavy machinery, oversized equipment and strategic materials required for the construction and operation of the facility, reducing dependence on road transport.
