Awareness is key to preventing cybercrime: Minister

The minister noted that women and youth were particularly vulnerable to cyber fraud. Criminals often posed as customs officers, police officials, or bank representatives to cheat people. Many fell victim to fake calls, he said.

Kurnool: Industries Minister TG Bharath has said awareness is the key to preventing cybercrime, and one must stay informed and be cautious.

He was speaking at an awareness programme titled ‘I am Cyber Smart’, organised for female students at KVR College on RS Road on Monday. Short films were shown at the event to educate students on cybercrime and the precautions to stay safe.
The minister noted that women and youth were particularly vulnerable to cyber fraud. Criminals often posed as customs officers, police officials, or bank representatives to cheat people. Many fell victim to fake calls, he said.
Bharat stressed the importance of setting strong passwords to protect bank accounts and advised caution while using social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
SP Vikrant Patil stated, “As smartphone usage increases, so do cybercrimes.” Digital frauds such as job scams, KYC and OTP frauds, investment scams, courier frauds, and financial frauds involving Aadhaar cards, debit cards and credit cards are becoming common.”
“If and when you fall victim to cybercrime, please call toll free number 1930 and report it. Victims can also register complaints on the cybercrime portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or contact their local police station for assistance,” he said.
College principal Subrahmanya Kumar, cluster university vice-chancellor Prof DVR Sai Gopal, Registrar Katta Venkateswarlu, police officers, Cyber Lab staff, and students attended the programme.
