Atchannaidu Urges Centre To Boost Fisheries, Vet College In North Andhra

State Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu has requested greater Central assistance for the development of the fisheries sector in Srikakulam district.

Visakhapatnam:State Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu has requested greater Central assistance for the development of the fisheries sector in Srikakulam district.

During a meeting with Union Minister for Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh) in New Delhi on Tuesday, Atchannaidu highlighted the significance of Srikakulam’s 194-km-long coastline and proposed key projects under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).

His proposals included installing 100 artificial reefs and setting up 20 Climate Resilient Fishery Villages (CRCFVs). He also suggested doubling the stocking density of fingerlings from 1,000 to 2,000 per hectare and extending the stocking programme to all Gram Panchayat tanks.

The minister sought Central support for developing domestic fish marketing infrastructure under PMMSY guidelines.

Additionally, he raised concerns about the Veterinary Science College at Garividi, Vizianagaram district, which has only received recognition for its first two academic years from the Veterinary Council of India (VCI). The third and fourth years are yet to be approved, causing anxiety among students.

He urged the Centre to grant full recognition and allow students to continue their studies at Garividi instead of being shifted elsewhere. The college remains excluded from the First Schedule of the Indian Veterinary Council Act, 1984, due to faculty shortages.
