Atchannaidu moots PPP mode for development of Srikakulam

Atchannaidu has proposed a public-private partnership model to transform backward Srikakulam district's infrastructure over the next five years

Visakhapatnam: Agriculture Minister Atchannaidu has proposed a public-private partnership (PPP) model to transform backward Srikakulam district's infrastructure over the next five years.

Despite the district’s potential, it remains backward. The minister attributes this to a lack of unity and cooperation, particularly in advancing proposals like the airport.

Speaking at the inauguration of the BC Bhavan that was constructed at a cost of `5 crore to commemorate social reformer Mahatma Jothi Rao Phule's Jayanti, Atchannaidu expressed concern over the district's low per capita income. The district ranked low at 26 in the state.

He criticised protests against development projects such as the airport, which he believes obstructed progress. Srikakulam risks stagnation for another 70 years without a shift in mindset.

The minister emphasised the importance of industrialization in curbing migration and alleviating poverty. He also criticised the politicisation of elections, which he said diverted focus from development.

Atchannaidu, who has served as an MLA six times, a minister twice and as state party president, said he remained “committed to the district's progress.”

He said, “Some 60 per cent of AP’s poor have historically been treated as mere voting machines.” However, he claimed that the Telugu Desam created opportunities for the backward classes.

Reflecting on his tenure, Atchannaidu highlighted initiatives such as the Chandranna Bhima scheme, stadiums in 175 constituencies, BC hostels in every constituency and funding for BC welfare projects.

The minister called for cooperation to revitalise Srikakulam's main centre, expressing concern over the market's pitiable state and the demolition of the municipal office.
