ASI Finds Inscription Depicting Amaravati Stupa in Prakasam District

It states that the donation was made for the merit of Rudramadevi and the donor himself

VIJAYAWADA: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), during a recent epigraphical survey in the Nallamala reserve forest, documented a fragmentary inscription engraved on a stone slab depicting the Amaravati stupa and Muchalinda Naga near Ayyambotlapalle village in Yerragondapalem mandal of Prakasam district.

The inscription, written in Telugu and dated to 1285 CE, records the gift of Velmapalli village, located north of Guduru in Duvali-Kampana of Mettavadi, to Buddhadeva of Sridhanyam.

According to the inscription, the grant was made by Bolanaya Mallikarjuna Nayaka for conducting “Anga-Ranga-Bhola and Buddha Dharma Sanga-Ratnatrya Paribhoga” on the banks of the Krishna River. It states that the donation was made for the merit of Rudramadevi and the donor himself.

According to the ASI, the inscription indicates that the Amaravati stupa continued to enjoy religious significance in the Krishna River region from the 4th century BCE until the 13th century CE.
