Artificial Reefs Project Launched To Boost Fishermen’s Livelihood In Visakhapatnam
Fisheries minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu launched the initiative on Monday.

Visakhapatnam:Visakhapatnam has taken a significant step toward marine conservation and fisheries enhancement with the inauguration of the Artificial Reefs project at Jalari Yendada.
Fisheries minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu launched the initiative on Monday. It aims to strengthen marine ecosystems while improving the livelihood of local fishermen.
The minister announced that 22 artificial reef units would be installed in North Andhra’s coastal waters in the initial phase, with plans for expansion to other districts. These human-made underwater structures would serve as marine habitats, encouraging fish populations to flourish and providing better yields for fishermen.
Atchannaidu claimed that the fishing community was dear to the government. Some 634 transponders were distributed to mechanised boats at the Visakhapatnam fishing harbour under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), funded entirely by a 100 per cent subsidy. The transponders would aid in monitoring boats at sea, and ensuring safety during storms and other emergencies.
The minister also outlined future provisions for subsidised GPS devices, echosounders, boats, engines, nets and ropes for fishermen. Additionally, he promised to resolve pending diesel oil subsidies and ex-gratia payments. Officials were asked to liaise with the VPA chairman to set up cranes and cradles in the fishing harbour to enhance operational efficiency.
During his visit to the caged seaweed culture units established under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana at RK Beach, the minister emphasised the government’s plan to expand seaweed cultivation, so as to create more employment opportunities for young fishermen and women.
The event was attended by special chief secretary Rajasekhar, fisheries commissioner Ramashankar Nayak, Visakhapatnam fisheries joint director Lakshmana Rao, CMFRI chief scientist Joy Kizakuddin and local fishermen.
