AP’s Power Demand Set to Hit 260 MU at Peak This May

Once the Kharif season begins in June, the demand for power from the farm sector may rise in case the arrival of the south-west monsoon gets delayed

Vijayawada: With the 2025 summer heat picking up, the power demand in Andhra Pradesh had peaked to 256.80 million units (MU) per day as on March 28. It is likely to touch 260 MU when summer peaks during May.

AP Genco authorities say AP witnesses power demand ranging from 230–240 MU per day on an average. The demand goes up when the temperatures rise, especially during the summer, as the requirement of power goes up.

Power demand touched 254 MU on Friday, as the temperatures rose in several parts of AP.

Currently, there is not much demand for power, as there are no major agriculture activities except for raising of some commercial and horticulture crops in parts of AP like West Godavari and Chittoor.

Once the Kharif season begins in June, the demand for power from the farm sector may rise in case the arrival of the south-west monsoon gets delayed.

AP is currently meeting most of its power demand with generation of thermal power from the Vijayawada and Krishnapatnam thermal power stations. However, it is purchasing 20–25 MU of power per day to bridge the gap between demand and supply.

Power authorities have not imposed any power cuts so far in the state, except for usual power disruptions for a brief period for regular maintenance works. Whenever APEPDCL or APSPDCL take up maintenance works, they announce power disruptions for some time with advance intimation to people of the affected areas.

Authorities maintain that from April 2022 onwards, no official power cut has been imposed in the state on any sector of power consumers.

A senior official from AP Genco said, “We have no issues with availability of power. As the power demand is expected to touch 260 MU in May, we are accordingly preparing to supply the required power.”
