APPCB Pulls Up Industries For Pollution In Visakhapatnam

VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) convened a key review meeting on August 25th In Vijayawada with top management and representatives of major industries in the Visakhapatnam Bowl area and its surroundings.
The meeting assessed compliance with environmental standards and the need to strengthen air and water pollution control measures.
Chaired by APPCB chairman and member secretary, the meeting has come in the backdrop of deteriorating air quality in Visakhapatnam, particularly in the Port area, Pedagantyada, Gajuwaka, Lankapalem, and Parawada. The chairman expressed dissatisfaction over dust pollution from Hinduja National Power Corporation (HNPC) and NTPC, as well as water and air pollution from JN Pharmacity, Parawada, and APIIC, Atchutapuram.
Industries informed the board that they have prepared short‑term and long‑term measures to curb pollution. They underlined their commitment to implementing these measures within the stipulated timelines. Short‑term measures are expected to be completed within three to six months, while long‑term initiatives will be implemented within a year.
The APPCB directed Visakhapatnam Port Authority and its PPP operators to adhere to their proposals and timelines strictly.
Coromandel International has been instructed to create adequate gypsum storage facilities. HNPC has been asked to prevent spillage and fugitive dust emissions during coal and ash transportation. NTPC’s Simhadri Super Thermal Power Project has been ordered to take immediate steps to prevent ash drifting from its ash pond towards Pittavanipalem village.
Further, the board reviewed RINL’s pollution‑control measures. It has been asked to control emissions from coke oven batteries, captive power plants, sinter plants, and other process areas.
Visakha Pharmacity has been directed to strengthen odour‑control measures and prevent contaminated runoff from entering downstream tanks.
Andhra Pradesh Environmental Technology Limited (APETL) has been asked to monitor tanker movements, prevent runoff contamination, and upgrade its common effluent treatment plant.
All industries have been reminded to ensure 33 per cent green cover under the “Great Green Wall” initiative announced by the deputy Chief minister.
The APPCB reiterated that strict compliance with environmental standards is mandatory. Corrective measures must be implemented before the coming winter season to avoid a repeat of the poor air quality recorded in December 2025.
The board has warned that stringent action will be taken against industries failing to comply with its orders.
