APPCB Head Calls for Turning Waste Into Wealth
Krishnaiah says state’s new recycling policy, incentives to boost green industries

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board chairman Dr P. Krishnaiah has called for turning waste generated from various sectors like industries, agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries to be treated as a resource to create wealth.
Taking part in a workshop held here on Friday, the chairman opined that with the AP Cabinet approving the recycling policy, more environmentally friendly industries would come up in the state and said that by providing additional incentives for recycling, there would be a great opportunity for setting up ancillary industries in the state.
He expressed concern with regard to the agriculture sector, referring to the use of mulching films, thin plastic pipes in drip irrigation and discarded fishing nets and other plastic waste in the fisheries sector and the use of plastic shade nets in the horticulture causing severe harm to the health of the soil and called upon the stakeholder departments to adopt alternate methods.
Chief environmental engineer M. Rajasekhar explained in detail how much quantity of waste was being generated in agriculture, aquaculture, dairy, poultry and other sectors and how proper management of such waste could yield better results.
