VIJAYAWADA: In a major boost to minority education, Andhra Pradesh Waqf Board on Sunday distributed college allotment certificates to 250 meritorious students selected under the Taalim-e-Hunar Talent Test for free residential education in premier institutions.

Addressing a gathering on the occasion at the Tummalapalli Kalakshetram in Vijayawada, Minority Welfare, Waqf and Urdu Academy minister N.M.D. Farooq said nearly ₹6 crore have been released from the Waqf Board resources to ensure that talented minority students from economically weaker sections are not deprived of higher education. Minority students who have secured at least 450 marks in SSC had been shortlisted through a special entrance test for admission into residential coaching institutions.

Farooq described the programme as a milestone in minority welfare and assured full support from the state government. He stressed on the need to protect and commercially develop valuable Waqf properties across the state to generate income and fund educational and welfare initiatives for minorities.

Speaking on the occasion, State Waqf Board chairman Sheikh Abdul Aziz said 250 students have been selected from among 6,605 candidates who appeared for the talent test for which 7,400 applications had been received. He expressed satisfaction that girls account for 41 per cent of the selected candidates, surpassing the 33 per cent reservation earmarked for them. All these students will be enrolled at the prestigious Chaitanya Gosala Campus in Vijayawada and provided residential coaching for IIT, medical, and other competitive examinations.

Abdul Aziz said the programme is being implemented under the P4 (Public Private People Partnership) model in line with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s vision that poverty should never become a barrier to education.

Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni) lauded the initiative and urged minority youth to pursue their studies in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing. He proposed setting up skill development centres in Shadi Khanas to enhance employability of Muslim youth.

Those who spoke on the occasion include MLC Zakia Khanam, Minority Affairs adviser Sharif Mohammed, MLAs Gadde Rammohan and Mohammed Nazeer Ahmed, and School Education commissioner A. Tameem Ansaria, who highlighted the transformative role of education in empowering minority communities.
