AP Tops Country in Patient Safety With Score of 86
Andhra Pradesh ranks first in India in patient safety with a score of 86, completing 100% inspections in 62 targeted hospitals
Andhra Pradesh has emerged as the top-performing state in the country in patient safety, scoring 86 for adherence to hospital quality standards, according to data released by the Centre at a national World Patient Safety Day programme in New Delhi on Thursday.
Madhya Pradesh ranked second with 84.5, followed by Gujarat with 83.5, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu with 83 and Tamil Nadu with 82. The lowest scores were recorded by Bihar (61), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (49.5), Haryana (47), Himachal Pradesh (35) and Arunachal Pradesh (25).
AP completed 100 per cent patient-safety inspections in all 62 targeted hospitals — 53 area hospitals and nine district hospitals. The inspections were conducted through a patient-safety self-assessment mechanism. District quality teams and the state quality department reviewed the findings and submitted a consolidated report to the National Health Systems Resource Centre (NHSRC) on August 10.
The state has also made progress under the National Quality Assurance Scheme (NQAS), with 65 per cent of government health institutions receiving certification. The scheme assesses hospitals on quality healthcare, patient safety, cleanliness and patient-centred services, among other prescribed standards.
The national programme, organised by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the National Health Mission, with support from the NHSRC, focused on “Safe Care for Non-Communicable Diseases”. Discussions covered patient safety in the detection and treatment of non-communicable diseases, medication use, follow-up tests and monitoring.
Additional Secretary of the Union health ministry and NHM Mission Director Aradhana Patnaik was the chief guest. Joint Secretary Sibin C. and NHSRC Executive Director Professor (Dr) Pragya Sharma also attended the event.
Commissioner of Medical and Family Welfare and NHM MD K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu virtually explained AP’s NQAS implementation and quality improvements. State coordinator Nagalakshmi attended the programme and participated in discussions on safety protocols.
Health minister Satya Kumar Yadav congratulated officials, quality teams, hospitals and medical staff, saying the achievement reflected their collective efforts. He called for continued focus on patient safety and further improvement in healthcare standards.
