AP To Replace 10.5 Lakh Street Lights With Smart LEDs
Centralised system to cut power use, improve maintenance and boost public safety
Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government is set to roll out an Integrated Smart LED Street Lighting Project across all 123 urban local bodies (ULBs), replacing nearly 10.5 lakh conventional street lights with smart LEDs linked to a statewide Centralised Control and Monitoring System.
Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), under the Union Ministry of Power, has signed a tripartite agreement with the Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration (CDMA) and the ULBs for implementation of the project.
The project will cover 7.5 lakh street lights in the initial phase and another three lakh under the extended scope. Each light will be equipped with an Individual Light Monitoring (ILM) controller for remote switching, energy measurement, fault detection and predictive maintenance.
The centralised system will provide real-time monitoring, GIS-based asset management, automated alerts, performance analytics and reporting.
Preparations were reviewed at a virtual meeting attended by MA&UD Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar, CDMA P. Sampath Kumar, APGENCO and APSEEDCO Managing Director S. Naga Lakshmi and EESL CEO Akhilesh Kumar Dixit.
Officials said the initial 7.5 lakh smart LEDs were expected to save around 19.57 million units of electricity annually and reduce consumption by nearly 20 per cent. The project would also help reduce carbon emissions, electricity bills and maintenance costs, besides improving illumination, public safety and the speed of fault rectification.
The project is being taken up as a next-generation version of the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP), under which EESL has replaced more than 1.3 crore conventional lights across the country.
Suresh Kumar said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had stressed transparency, accountability and protection of public interest in implementing the project.
Sampath Kumar said regional ULB commissioners would attend high-level review meetings from August 11 to 14 to expedite implementation. Dixit assured that EESL would complete the project within the stipulated timeline and work towards making Andhra Pradesh a national model for smart and energy-efficient urban lighting.
