AP, Telangana to Discuss Krishna Water Sharing on Sept 4
The move follows appeals from public representatives to water resources minister Nimmala Ramanaidu for drinking water supplies during the dry spell, with concerns over rainfall in September, October and November.
Vijayawada:Andhra Pradesh will draw 8 tmcft of Krishna water from the Nagarjunasagar project’s Right Main Canal (RMC) Power House over 15 days from Wednesday to meet drinking water needs in parts of five districts — Palnadu, Bapatla, Guntur, Prakasam and Markapur.
The water resources authorities began drawing around 3,000 cusecs on Wednesday and will use the water to fill summer storage tanks and overhead tanks of municipal bodies to meet drinking water needs in the coming months.
The move follows appeals from public representatives to water resources minister Nimmala Ramanaidu for drinking water supplies during the dry spell, with concerns over rainfall in September, October and November.
As Andhra Pradesh began drawing water from Nagarjuna Sagar, Telangana also started drawing water for drinking water needs. AP officials are learnt to have informed the Telangana Engineer-in-Chief about the drawal.
The water resources authorities have asked the administrations of all five districts to form patrolling teams comprising revenue, Rural Water Supply, police and other departments to prevent unauthorised drawal from the RMC.
Nagarjuna Sagar Project Chief Engineer (Projects) K. Ramesh said the issue of drinking water requirements from the Krishna river had been raised at a recent meeting of the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB).
“We started drawing Krishna water from the Nagarjuna Sagar RMC Power House on Wednesday and will continue for 15 days. Based on the need, we may draw water again towards the end of November,” he said.
He said another KRMB meeting was scheduled for September 4, where Andhra Pradesh and Telangana officials would discuss Krishna water sharing.
