AP Sanctions 177 Mortuary Freezer Chambers For Government Hospitals
Each freezer chamber had been procured at a cost of up to ₹3.71 lakh. Each unit can preserve two bodies, improving the handling of medico-legal cases and unidentified bodies: Health minister Satya Kumar Yadav

VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh coalition government has sanctioned 177 mortuary freezer chambers for secondary-level government hospitals across the state at a cost of ₹6.57 crore to strengthen mortuary infrastructure and improve the preservation of bodies awaiting post-mortem examinations.
Health minister Satya Kumar Yadav said each freezer chamber had been procured at a cost of up to ₹3.71 lakh. Each unit can preserve two bodies, improving the handling of medico-legal cases and unidentified bodies.
Bodies of victims of road accidents, suicides and other unnatural deaths are routinely brought to government hospital mortuaries for post-mortem examinations. Unidentified bodies are also stored in freezer chambers until identification procedures are completed. Many government hospitals have been facing difficulties due to outdated or non-functional freezer equipment.
To address the issue, the government has procured new freezer chambers for secondary-level hospitals. The minister said the units would be distributed to 119 community health centres, 49 area hospitals and eight district hospitals across the state.
Of the 177 freezer chambers sanctioned, around 150 have already been dispatched, while the remaining units will be supplied shortly. The government is also upgrading mortuary rooms to facilitate the installation and operation of the new equipment.
