AP Revives Welfare Schemes For Construction Workers

The minister urged industries to strictly implement workplace safety measures, stating that workers virtually place their lives in the hands of employers while on duty

VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh labour minister Vasamsetti Subhash on Wednesday announced the revival of welfare schemes for construction workers, including `20,000 marriage assistance, `20,000 maternity benefit, `60,000 natural death compensation and `20,000 funeral assistance.

Addressing the Srama Sakthi and Best Management Awards programme in Vijayawada, the minister said the coalition government was giving equal importance to workers and managements while focusing on labour welfare, industrial growth and employment generation in the State.

Subhash said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu was giving top priority to workers’ welfare, safety, healthcare and employment opportunities, believing that a strong workforce would strengthen the State.

The minister urged industries to strictly implement workplace safety measures, stating that workers virtually place their lives in the hands of employers while on duty. He alleged that labour welfare had been neglected during the previous regime and several welfare schemes for construction workers had been discontinued.

Subhash said the government was attracting investments through its “Ease of Doing Business” and “Speed of Doing Business” policies, creating employment opportunities and moving towards fulfilling its promise of generating 20 lakh jobs.

He further said “Labour Addas” were being established across the State with facilities including employment support, rest areas, food, washrooms and skill training.

The minister added that `250 crore would be spent on health screening programmes for workers and that modern ESI hospitals were being established in Tirupati, Achyutapuram, Guntur, Kurnool and Visakhapatnam. Proposals have also been prepared for 30 new ESI dispensaries across the State.
