AP MPs Seek in LS Impact of US Tariffs on Indian Industry, Exports

Government cites steady export growth, stakeholder consultations and trade diversification

Nellore: Union Commerce and Industry Minister of State Jitin Prasada told the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that the central government is closely monitoring exports and taking steps to promote export of Indian products across the world.

He was responding to a question from Nellore MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy, Eluru MP Putta Mahesh Kumar and Ongole MP Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, seeking details of the impact of US-imposed tariffs on India’s industrial sector, exporters, farmers and seafood exporters.

The AP MPs asked whether the government has conducted any study in the last two years on the impact of US tariffs and what measures are being taken to protect the affected sectors, compensate for losses and to develop alternative markets.

In his reply, the union minister maintained that export data continues showing a steady growth, with India’s exports during April-November rising from $278.80 billion in 2023 to $284.60 billion in 2024 and $292.07 billion in 2025. Seafood exports during the same period stood at $5.22 billion in 2023, $4.95 billion in 2024 and $5.75 billion in 2025.

Andhra Pradesh exported goods worth $19,759.86 million in 2023–24 and $20,782.81 million in 2024–25.

Jitin Prasada said the government is consulting stakeholders to assess the impact of US tariffs. It is pursuing a multi-pronged strategy, including engagement with the US for a mutually beneficial trade agreement, trade facilitation measures and credit guarantee schemes for exporters.

These are in addition to GST 2.0 reforms to boost domestic demand and free trade agreements with new countries to mitigate the impact of US tariffs on Indian exports, the union minister added.
