AP Medical Council To Probe Woman’s Death During Alleged Unauthorised Abortion
Anti-quackery panel to identify those involved and recommend action after inquiry
Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh Medical Council will inquire into the death of a woman following an alleged unauthorised abortion procedure at Yerragondapalem in Prakasam district.
In a statement issued on Friday, AP Medical Council chairman Dr Garlapati Nanda Kishhore said the Council’s anti-quackery committee would investigate the incident and recommend further action.
The woman allegedly died after health staff conducted the procedure while receiving advice from a doctor over the phone.
Dr Nanda Kishhore said the anti-quackery committee, headed by Dr Subba Naidu, had been tasked with identifying those involved in unauthorised medical practice and initiating action in coordination with the health department, district administration and police.
He said only persons with the required medical qualifications, registration and licence were permitted to practise modern medicine, prescribe medicines and conduct abortion procedures. Those practising modern medicine without the required qualifications or other authorisation could face legal action under Section 20 of the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council Act and Section 34 of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, he said.
The Council said it would await the findings of the anti-quackery committee before considering further action.
