Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government is set to roll out the Nethannaku Bharosa scheme for handloom weavers on August 7th, coinciding with the occasion of the National Handloom Day, officials from the Department of Handlooms & Textiles stated.
The officials said groundwork for the scheme is complete and about 54,000 eligible weavers across the state are expected to benefit. Under the scheme, each weaver will receive Rs 25,000 per year. The previous YSRCP government provided Rs 24,000 under the same scheme.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had earlier announced an additional Rs 1,000 to support weavers, even though it was not part of the election manifesto.
The coalition government has earmarked Rs 250 crore in the state budget for the scheme, and ancillary workers related to the handloom industry are likely to be included in the list of beneficiaries. The earlier YSRCP government had excluded this category.
Assistance will be provided to one member per family, limited to weavers who own looms.
Reports suggest that 10,000 workers engaged in allied handloom activities such as yarn winding and dyeing, among other services, have been identified, and a proposal has been submitted to the government for approval.
Weaver associations have welcomed the move, saying the enhanced assistance will help families dependent on handlooms cope with rising input costs.
