AP Govt Issues Orders To Conduct Elections For 100 Urban Local Bodies
Giving priority to the issue of reservations in the municipal polls, the government has decided to implement 33.33 per cent reservation for BCs to ensure greater representation in ULB elections.

Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government issued formal orders on Wednesday to initiate the preliminary process for elections to 100 urban local bodies in the state. With this, the official groundwork for the municipal election process has begun in the state.
Giving priority to the issue of reservations in the municipal polls, the government has decided to implement 33.33 per cent reservation for BCs to ensure greater representation in urban local body elections as well.
The tenure of governing bodies in 87 municipalities and urban local bodies has already ended, while the term of governing bodies in another 13 urban local bodies is set to expire in November. Against this backdrop, the government has directed officials to expedite arrangements for conducting elections in areas where the terms have expired.Th
The government has made it clear that it will proceed in coordination with the State Election Commission. It has ordered that voter list preparation, ward-wise procedures, finalization of ward reservations, and preliminary steps related to election notifications be completed within the stipulated time.
With the terms of 13 more municipal governing bodies ending in November, the government’s decision to bring all 100 urban local bodies in the state into the election process at one go has gained significance. The State Assembly passed the Municipal Laws (Fourth Amendment) Bill, paving the way for direct elections to mayors and municipal chairpersons. The amendment would replace the existing indirect election system.
