Vijayawada: A Group of Ministers (GoM) of the AP government wants to carry out a comprehensive study on improper disposal of used liquor containers that poses challenges to environmental sustainability, public hygiene, and waste management.
The GoM on reforms in the State Excise Policy held a virtual meeting on Thursday to deliberate measures to address environmental concerns arising from the disposal of used liquor containers. Health minister Satya Kumar Yadav, Excise minister Kollu Ravindra, Civil Supplies minister Nadendla Manohar, and principal secretary (Revenue – Excise) Mukesh Kumar Meena, along with senior officials, attended the meeting.
Excise authorities have come up with a proposal to adopt circular economy principles to promote scientific collection, recycling, and responsible disposal of used liquor containers. They pointed out that nearly 215 crore liquor containers had been sold in the state during 2025–26, 63 per cent of them PET bottles, 36 per cent glass bottles, and one per cent cans.
The ministers observed that the circular economy principle could help improve recycling rates, reduce environmental impact, and encourage responsible consumer behaviour.
In this regard, the GoM has proposed popularising the circular economy initiative among consumers and the general public.
