Annual Amaravati Championship in Tirupati From August 24

TIRUPATI: As many as 12,428 young athletes from across Andhra Pradesh will take part in the Amaravati Championship 2026 to be held in Tirupati from August 24 to 27.
Athletes will compete in 12 disciplines, including archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, basketball, chess, hockey, kabaddi, kho-kho, weightlifting, volleyball, and yoga. The events include both individual and team competitions.
The selection process for the Amaravati Championship 2026 began with competitions in all 175 assembly constituencies from July 15 to July 30. A total of 2,07,498 players participated, including 1,42,306 boys and 65,192 girls. The competitions had been held with the support of physical education teachers and physical directors, with Zilla Parishad High Schools serving as venues.
District-level competitions followed from August 6 to August 15, with around 83,650 players participating in them. Top performers from these competitions have qualified for the state-level event in Tirupati.
The Amaravati Championship had first been conducted in 2025. This year, the competition has been expanded to include Under-17 and Under-23 categories for both boys and girls. The competitions will be in the Under-17 and Under-23 categories. 6,214 boys and an equal number of girls will be vying for the medals.
Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh chairman A. Ravi Naidu said the championship is being conducted to mark the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand. Their aim is to ensure that talented youngsters identified at the grassroots level get opportunities to progress through the district and state-level competitions.
Ravi said the competitions carry a total prize money of ₹91.90 lakh. Winners will be felicitated during the National Sports Day celebrations on August 29.
