KADAPA: Andhra Pradesh Women’s Commission Chairperson Dr Rayapati Shailaja called for greater support from families and society to encourage talented women cricketers, saying the sport had been gaining wider recognition and popularity across the country.
She was speaking as the chief guest at a programme held on a private college ground on the outskirts of Kadapa on Saturday.
Dr Shailaja said women’s cricket had a history of nearly five decades, but the sport had received widespread recognition and public support in the country only in recent years. She said the Indian women’s cricket team had demonstrated through its determination, commitment and performance that women were in no way inferior to men in the sport.
The growing number of spectators at women’s cricket matches and the significant rise in viewership were encouraging signs, she said.
“Earlier, we proudly spoke of the Indian team as the ‘Men in Blue’. Today, it is equally heartening that we can proudly speak of the ‘Ladies in Blue’,” Dr Shailaja said.
She stressed the need to create a supportive environment for women aspiring to pursue cricket professionally and urged families to encourage girls with sporting talent to take up the game and pursue it seriously.
