Andhra Pradesh Sets Target to Conduct Four Lakh Cataract Surgeries This Year

Vijayawada: Marking May Day, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu interacted with construction workers, pension beneficiaries, children and healthcare providers during his tour of Krishna district on Friday.

The Chief Minister inaugurated the new LV Prasad Eye Institute Eye Care Centre at Gudlavalleru. He said the government had allocated Rs 19,305 crore for the health sector in the annual budget and set a target of four lakh cataract surgeries this year.

During a visit to Veerankilaku village, the CM stopped at an under-construction building and enquired with the workers about their livelihood, family conditions and hardships. He interacted with mason Alla Bakshu and woman worker Sumalatha, besides explaining to them the citizen services available through the “Mana Mitra” WhatsApp application.

He also spoke to rod-bending worker Kondeti Seemaiah and centring worker Bolem Srinivasa Rao on the first floor of the building and enquired about their family situations. As part of labour welfare measures, he handed over a financial assistance cheque of `20,000 to Manikonda Akhila, the daughter of construction worker Srihari Rao, who had recently delivered a baby.

Later, at Pamidimukkala in Pamarru constituency, the CM distributed pensions under the “Pedala Sevalo” programme. He handed over a Rs 10,000 pension to 13-year-old thalassemia patient Chagantipati Vivek and interacted with his family members on the boy’s health condition.

The family informed the Chief Minsiter that Vivek required blood transfusions three to four times every month, resulting in medical expenses of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000. They also said the boy was bright in studies and appealed to the CM for support towards his treatment, to which Naidu responded positively.

While travelling to the place of another event after the pension distribution programme, the CM noticed an Anganwadi centre in Pamidimukkala village and stopped there to interact with the children. He listened to rhymes sung by them and enquired with teachers and staff about the nutritional food being supplied to the children.

Earlier in the day, Naidu inaugurated the LV Prasad Eye Care Centre at Gudlavalleru along with health minister Satya Kumar Yadav and institute founder chairman GN Rao. The CM said eye hospitals being established in rural areas would greatly benefit local people. He appreciated Suven Life Sciences chairman Jasti Venkat for supporting the establishment of the centre in a spirit of “giving back” to society.

The CM said the state government had allocated Rs 19,305 crore for the health sector in the latest budget and set a target of conducting four lakh cataract surgeries this year. Eye screening tests were also being conducted for school students, he said, adding that the government aimed to strengthen healthcare delivery through digital health records under the Sanjeevani project.
