NELLORE: Social welfare minister Dr Dola Sri Balaveeranjaneyaswamy conducted a surprise inspection of the SC Girls’ Hostel in Markapuram town on Sunday and expressed displeasure over lapses in providing facilities to students.

The minister pulled up hostel staff for serving breakfast late and expressed dissatisfaction over poor sanitation and delays in providing students with uniforms, sweaters, night dresses and towels. He directed officials to strictly implement the prescribed menu and ensure timely provision of all essential facilities.

He also interacted with the students and created awareness about personal hygiene and healthcare.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister said the government had, for the first time, appointed sanitation staff in SC hostels through outsourcing agencies. He said ₹143 crore had been spent on repairs to SC welfare hostels across the State.

Since the coalition government assumed office, efforts had been made to provide quality education and improved facilities to students in welfare hostels and residential schools, he said, adding that the government was committed to the overall development of poor students.
