VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) stepped up inspections of hotels and restaurants to enforce hygiene and food safety standards following orders from commissioner H.M. Dhyanachandra.
Public health department officials conducted surprise checks across KT Road, BRP Road and Governorpet. Teams inspected establishments including Minerva, Vegitreat and Madina hotels and found kitchens without tiled flooring, mould on walls and unhygienic surroundings.
Officials also noted poor drinking water quality, improper toilet maintenance and food being prepared in unsanitary conditions.
Three hotels — Hotel Srinivasa, Chintala Vari Bhojanam and Aithe Biryani — were fined ₹2,000 each, totalling ₹6,000, for violations. Jathar Mandi Hotel was found to be compliant with hygiene norms.
Notices were issued to two other hotels, directing their managements to rectify deficiencies within the stipulated time. Authorities warned that failure to comply would invite legal action, including cancellation of trade licences if necessary.
They stressed that hotel and restaurant owners must follow sanitation rules to ensure safe food for the public.
Sanitary supervisors D. Somaraju and Saleem Ahmed, sanitary inspector Kota Gopayya, ward secretary Rahul and public health department staff participated in the drive.
