NELLORE: Prakasam District Collector P. Rajababu paid tributes to freedom fighter and social reformer Sardar Gouthu Latchanna on his 118th birth anniversary on Sunday, describing him as a leader who left an indelible mark on the freedom struggle and public service.
Speaking at a programme organised by the district BC welfare department at Prakasam Bhavan, the collector garlanded Latchanna’s portrait and offered floral tributes.
Rajababu recalled Latchanna’s efforts for the development of oppressed and marginalised sections and his role in the freedom movement. He recalled Latchanna’s 1937 padayatra from Ichchapuram to Madras with farmers, demanding the abolition of the zamindari system.
The collector said the Centre had honoured Latchanna’s services by issuing a special postal stamp, while the State government officially observes his birth anniversary.
He called upon the younger generation to draw inspiration from Latchanna’s fighting spirit, commitment to public service and self-respect and urged them to carry forward his legacy.
State Vaddera Corporation chairman Eswar, director Ramadevi, Gouda Sangham district honorary president Mekapothula Raghavayya, president Balagani Anjaneyulu and former Kothapatnam MPP Balagani Srinivasa Rao, among others, attended the programme.
