Visakhapatnam: A major fire broke out at a scrap shop in the Town Kotha Road area of Old Town near the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium on Sunday afternoon, triggering panic among residents and bystanders.
The blaze erupted around 1:15 pm and spread rapidly due to highly flammable materials such as scrap vehicles, plastic, tyres and used oil, releasing thick toxic fumes. With a petrol bunk located barely 100 metres away and a timber depot adjacent to the shop, locals feared a major disaster and rushed to safety.
Fire personnel, led by regional fire officer Niranjan Reddy, reached the spot within 15 minutes with four firetenders and brought the fire under control after nearly two hours. "Intervening buildings helped prevent the flames from reaching the petrol bunk," said the regional fire officer.
No casualties or injuries were reported. The fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, while property loss is estimated to run into lakhs.
Visakhapatnam South MLA Vamsi Krishna Yadav visited the site and assured preventive measures, including relocating such units away from residential areas.
