Andhra Pradesh: Eruvaka Pournami Celebrated Across Rayalaseema

KURNOOL: Eruvaka Pournami, marking the commencement of the kharif sowing season, was celebrated across the Rayalaseema districts on Monday, with farmers, agriculture officials and public representatives participating in the festivities.
In Nandyal district, minister for law N.M.D. Farooq assured farmers of the government's continued support. “The government will stand by farmers in every possible way. Due to the El Niño impact, I urge farmers to choose crops that can withstand water scarcity,” he said.
Nandyal MP Byreddy Shabari stressed the importance of scientific farming practices. “Farmers should rely on soil testing before selecting crops and applying fertilisers. Scientific cultivation is key to better yields,” she said.
District collector Rajakumari advised farmers to avoid excessive use of fertilisers. “Excessive use of urea is damaging soil health. Balanced fertiliser application is essential for sustainable agriculture,” she said.
In Anantapur district, the festival was observed at the Rekulakunta Agrometeorological Station under the aegis of the Agriculture Department. Anantapur MP Ambika Lakshmi Narayana said Andhra Pradesh ranks second in the country in micro-irrigation, reflecting the state's focus on efficient water use.
Principal agricultural scientist Dr M. Vijayashankar Babu advised farmers in rainfed areas to adopt climate-resilient agricultural practices. “Farmers should select crops based on weather conditions, use quality seeds and follow balanced nutrient management for better productivity,” he said.
The festival was also celebrated in Kadapa and Kurnool districts, with agriculture officials and farmers participating in large numbers.
