Amaravati/ Parvathipuram Manyam: Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan on Wednesday virtually inaugurated the Gutchimi Kumki Elephant Camp in Parvathipuram Manyam district, hailing it as a "scientific and long-term solution" to the decades-old human-elephant conflict in north Andhra. The camp aims to regulate the movement of wild elephants, protect human lives and minimise crop damage caused by elephant incursions into villages.
"The government has a responsibility not only to ensure public safety but also to protect wildlife. The Gutchimi Elephant Camp has been established to reduce human-elephant conflict and promote harmonious coexistence between people and nature," said Kalyan after virtually inaugurating the camp.
He noted that the camp was conceived after local representatives and residents highlighted the recurring problem of wild herds entering villages, damaging crops and creating panic among people living near forest areas.
Referring to earlier operations in the Palamaneru region, the Deputy Chief Minister said Kumki elephants, supported by forest department personnel and modern technology, had helped reduce deaths arising from human-elephant conflict by more than 70 per cent while significantly curbing crop losses.
Kalyan expressed hope that the same model would be replicated successfully in Parvathipuram Manyam district and dedicated the elephant camp to the people of Andhra Pradesh.
He also thanked the Karnataka government for providing four Kumki elephants to Andhra Pradesh, describing the gesture as a reflection of the close ties between the two states.
