ANANTAPUR: More than 6,000 kg of plastic waste was cleared from the Tungabhadra High Level Main Canal passing through Anantapur city on Sunday as part of ‘Project Anantapur Mission Clean’, in a collective effort by citizens, civic authorities, educational institutions and voluntary organisations.

The clean-up drive was jointly organised by Discover Anantapur, Rotary Club Anantapur, Aryan School, Anantapur Youth Forum and SR Defence Academy, led by Discover Anantapur founder A.G. Anil Kumar.

The second edition of the drive cleared more than 6,000 kg of plastic waste dumped into the canal from upstream areas and within the city. The first edition had removed nearly 5,000 kg of plastic waste, taking the total cleared through the two drives to more than 11,000 kg.

More than 140 people, aged between 12 and 70, participated in the drive. Students, youngsters, senior citizens, volunteers and members of various organisations took part in the clean-up.

Anantapur municipal commissioner and civic staff also joined the citizens in clearing the waste from the canal.

Mr Anil Kumar said the participation of civic officials alongside citizens sent a message that cleanliness was a shared responsibility. He said coordinated efforts by citizens and authorities could bring visible improvements to the city’s environment.
