VISAKHAPATNAM: The Anatomy Museum at Andhra Medical College (AMC), one of the oldest medical institutions in India, has gained national recognition by being featured in the Directory of Indian Science Museums and Science Centres in India, recently published by the Union Ministry of Culture.

The museum houses over 700 meticulously preserved human and animal organ specimens and serves as a critical academic resource for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, as well as researchers. It plays a pivotal role in teaching anatomy, a core discipline in the medical curriculum at AMC.

“The museum’s collection includes several rare and unique specimens, such as a whale skull, elephant ivory, rosewood-made treasure chests, a case of secondary abdominal pregnancy, and records of a sextuple birth (six babies born in a single delivery),” said Dr S. Ravindra Kishore, head of the anatomy department.

Some of these specimens have even been showcased abroad during academic demonstrations and educational exchanges, underscoring the museum’s international relevance.

The museum, recognised both nationally and globally, places a strong emphasis on the safety and preservation of its artefacts. Alumni of AMC have also contributed significantly to the development and enrichment of the department.
