Amaravati Mega Economic Region Blueprint Unveiled to Drive AP Growth

Naidu advised officials to develop Amaravati as a major economic hub and growth engine. It should become a hub for investments and economic activity, with plans for high-rise and iconic buildings.

Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is pushing ahead with an ambitious plan to transform Amaravati from being the capital of Andhra Pradesh to a sprawling Mega Economic Region that would help the state become an economic powerhouse by 2047.

Naidu has approved the floating of a Request For Proposal (RFP) to prepare a development plan for the Amaravati Economic Region spread across nine districts from Eluru to Prakasam, and the constitution of a special tribunal to resolve disputes involving buildings and unauthorised constructions in the capital region.

He also initiated steps for development of the Amaravati Economic Region, spread across 44,962 sq-km covering nine districts, with the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) inviting tenders.

Naidu advised officials to develop Amaravati as a major economic hub and growth engine. It should become a hub for investments and economic activity, with plans for high-rise and iconic buildings.

The proposed economic region would encompass West Godavari, Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Guntur, Palnadu, Bapatla, Prakasam and Markapuram districts. The blueprint is being aligned with the Swarna Andhra Vision-2047 and the Centre’s City Economic Region framework prepared by NITI Aayog.

Officials said the government aims to develop Amaravati as the anchor city, while Vijayawada and Guntur will emerge as the industrial and service twin cities. Eluru and Bapatla are proposed as agro-industrial hubs, while Ongole and Markapuram are planned as mineral and manufacturing corridors. Port-led industrial clusters are also proposed around Machilipatnam, Ramayapatnam, Krishnapatnam and Kakinada.

The proposed region already contributes nearly 35.15 per cent of the state’s Gross State Domestic Product and is expected to become the key driver in AP’s target of achieving a trillion-dollar economy by 2047. The government is reportedly aiming to scale the Amaravati Economic Region itself into a $250-billion economy.

The officials stated that the project is receiving financial and technical support from the Asian Development Bank while Singapore is also partnering in the planning process. Officials are studying development models from Singapore, Greater Tokyo and Seoul while preparing the phased strategy.

The government plans to identify 10 to 12 major growth drivers and develop at least eight flagship projects capable of attracting international funding. More than 100 infrastructure and investment-oriented projects are expected to be prepared with “bankable pre-feasibility reports” to secure support from global financial institutions and private investors.

Key sectors identified for future growth include electronics, drones, semiconductor design, electric vehicle components, pharma, textiles, defence, aerospace and global capability centres. The plan also focuses on expanding urban areas, industrial corridors, logistics infrastructure and housing facilities.

Special emphasis is being laid on regional land pooling for industrial development and urban expansion. Existing land banks, previously acquired industrial lands and new land aggregation mechanisms will be integrated into the strategy.

The economic region will leverage major connectivity corridors, including the Chennai-Kolkata national highway, the proposed Amaravati-Anantapur expressway, the Vijayawada-Hyderabad corridor and extensive railway connectivity. Coastal industrial growth based on ports and the marine economy is also being prioritised.

The implementation strategy will be divided into short, medium and long-term phases ranging from one to 22 years, with clearly defined targets for 2030, 2035 and 2047. A digital dashboard and a dedicated project management unit will monitor implementation.
