Amaravati Envisioned As Model Green Capital

Andhra Pradesh aims for Net Zero by 2040, with Amaravati leading the green development mission

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh is “fully committed” to building a sustainable future with Amaravati envisioned as a model green capital for India.

This was stated here on Friday by the commissioner of the capital region development authority, K Kanna Babu. He said every APCRDA project is designed to integrate sustainable practices and green building principles.

In alignment with the Swarna Andhra 2047 vision and the state’s ambitious goal of achieving Net Zero by 2040, the APCRDA, in collaboration with the Indian Green Building Council, conducted a capacity building programme for the authority’s officials in Vijayawada. The council is a part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

The session witnessed the participation of over 50 senior officials from APCRDA, including the engineer-in-chief, chief engineer (H&B), director (planning), director (environment), and other key department heads. The programme provided detailed training on IGBC green building rating systems, empowering officials to incorporate sustainable development principles into all future infrastructure initiatives within the capital region.

Kanna Babu, who delivered the keynote address, reiterated the authority’s vision for a sustainable and resilient Amaravati. “Andhra Pradesh is fully committed to building a sustainable future, with Amaravati envisioned as a model green capital for India. Every APCRDA project is designed to integrate sustainable practices and green building principles,” he stated.

He said, “Our upcoming APCRDA Head Office in Amaravati will be a flagship Net Zero project, demonstrating our vision and setting a benchmark for all future developments. IGBC’s collaboration is vital in our journey toward realising Net Zero status by 2040.”

The commissioner stated that Andhra Pradesh has been a frontrunner in promoting sustainable urbanisation by integrating green building principles into its planning and regulatory frameworks. He recalled that Amaravati’s Master Plan was awarded the IGBC Green Cities ‘Platinum Rating during the 2018 Happy Cities Summit, making it India’s first capital city to be IGBC-certified by design.

Vijay Sai Meka, chairman, IGBC Amaravati chapter, commended APCRDA’s leadership in adopting IGBC Green Ratings in major developments. He said that as part of the MoU between APCRDA and IGBC, regular awareness and training programmes are being organised to further AP’s green transformation.

Senior representatives, including Ganesh Sai Chaitanya Gali, co-chair, IGBC Amaravati chapter, and Kiran Kumar Paruchuri, executive vice president, NAREDCO, highlighted the significance of the upcoming Green Andhra Summit, scheduled for August 7, 2025.

The summit is expected to serve as a major catalyst in advancing the Green and Net Zero Building movement across the state.

Sundeep V, senior counsellor, IGBC, reaffirmed the council’s commitment to supporting Andhra Pradesh as a knowledge and implementation partner in its sustainability journey.
