VISAKHAPATNAM: The countdown has begun for the inauguration of Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) International Airport at Bhogapuram, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to dedicate Andhra Pradesh’s newest aviation gateway to the nation on August 1.
The event marks the culmination of a major infrastructure project that promises to transform connectivity and economic prospects across north coastal Andhra.
Developed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Ltd, a subsidiary of GMR Airports Ltd, the greenfield facility is designed to handle 6 million passengers annually in its initial phase, with the capacity to scale to more than 40 million in future expansions.
The airport features a 3,800-metre Code 4E runway, a modern integrated terminal, dedicated cargo facilities, and advanced airside infrastructure to support both domestic and international operations.
The project has cleared all statutory and regulatory requirements, including the aerodrome licence from the DGCA, approvals from the bureau of civil aviation security, the Customs and Immigration notifications, and environmental clearances. These pave the way for immediate commencement of scheduled commercial operations following the inauguration.
Strategically located near Vizag, the airport will serve Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, and adjoining districts of southern Odisha and Chhattisgarh. It is expected to strengthen the Visakhapatnam Economic Region by supporting tourism, trade, logistics, and investment. Road connectivity projects have been fast-tracked, with seven approach roads and enhanced public transport services being readied to ensure seamless access.
Beyond passenger traffic, the airport’s cargo infrastructure and proximity to industrial corridors are expected to boost exports in pharmaceuticals, seafood, electronics, and advanced manufacturing. Sustainability measures such as renewable energy, rainwater harvesting, and energy-efficient systems have been integrated into its design.
