AILU Condemns Police Action Against Advocates
AILU condemned alleged police obstruction of advocates during a protest in Vijayawada and sought an Advocates Protection Act.
The All India Lawyers’ Union (AILU), Vijayawada City Committee, on Tuesday condemned the police action against advocates of the Bezawada Bar Association during a protest in the city.
In a statement, AILU alleged that police obstructed advocates who were proceeding to submit a memorandum at the statue of Dr B.R. Ambedkar on M.G. Road. It termed the action undemocratic and said police had no authority to interfere with peaceful protests.
The union also condemned the alleged attempt to illegally open a rowdy sheet against advocate Oggu Gavaskar and demanded withdrawal of cases against advocates Subhani and Palagani Ravi. It said the case against Ravi was related to a civil dispute.
AILU president Bommasani Ravi and secretary Kalathoti Kranthi Kumar said the Bar and police were important institutions of the judicial system and should act with restraint while protecting democratic rights.
The union demanded that the state government formulate and implement an Advocates Protection Act and take action against police officials responsible for the incident. It said it would support the Bezawada Bar Association’s course of action and participate in its agitation.
