NELLORE: In a major step towards empowering the visually impaired, Artificial Intelligence (AI) smart glasses were distributed to persons with 80–100 per cent vision impairment at Mamuduru village in Chejerla mandal of Nellore district on Sunday.

The distribution programme was jointly organised by the KIMS Foundation and Research Centre and the Achala Group at the ZP High School premises. In the first phase, 220 beneficiaries received AI smart glasses worth ₹30,000 each.

The organisers also provided hands-on training on the use and maintenance of the devices, enabling beneficiaries to carry out daily activities independently. The AI smart glasses support object and face recognition, reading assistance and safe navigation, helping users integrate better into everyday life.

Endowments minister Anam Ramnarayana Reddy, who participated in the programme, lauded the organisers for the humanitarian initiative.

KIMS Foundation chairman and former MLA Bollineni Krishnayya said the initiative brought immense satisfaction and announced that similar programmes, along with awareness and training sessions, would be conducted across the district. Achala Group vice-president Raviteja explained the functioning of the devices and demonstrated their features.

Representatives of the National Federation of the Blind and other associations appreciated the effort, describing it as life-changing for the visually impaired.

Earlier in the day, Anam Ramnarayana Reddy laid the foundation stone for a ₹60 lakh CC road from Viruvuru–Chejerla Road to Nadigadda Agraharam.
