AI New BFF on Friendship Day, But Humans Win Hands Down
The rise of digital interactions has had a profound effect on traditional gift shops

Visakhapatnam: Celebrations of Friendship Day this year have dramatically shifted towards digital platforms. While conventional gift shops are witnessing a decline in sales, many young individuals have sent "Happy Friendship Day" wishes to their AI companions via social media.
Social media platforms are brimming with posts from young people showing appreciation for their AI friends.
A user Harsha tweeted, "Happy Friendship Day to my AI, who has always been there for me, who stood by me, and who has made a meaningful impact in my life without any judgment."
User Shyam highlighted the importance of balancing technology with human relationships, stating, "In a tech-driven world, it's the genuine human connections that truly advance us. This Friendship Day, let’s honour the relationships that extend beyond code and machinery, because even amid digital innovation, empathy remains our strongest tie."
Not everyone shares the same sentiment. User Rohit Kumar expressed a different perspective on social media writing, "AI can converse. But it can never hold your hand, bring out genuine laughter, or remember your Grandma's name. True friendship is messy and irreplaceable. This #FriendshipDay2025, let's treasure human connections."
The rise of digital interactions has had a profound effect on traditional gift shops. Nalluri Kalavati, the owner of a local gift store at Jagadamba Junction, expressed her worries to Deccan Chronicle about a notable decline in business this year.
"Two to three years ago, I had numerous young people, including school and college students, who would buy friendship bands and cards, often exchanging them right outside my store. I witnessed some buyers last year. But this year, foot traffic has dropped significantly."
While physical retailers are struggling, online businesses are flourishing. Digital platforms now provide a wide array of virtual gift options, such as customised e-cards and digital friendship bands, responding to evolving consumer demands.
Significantly though, offline festivities are creatively adapting to the digital trend. In Visakhapatnam, event planners have arranged unique activities centred around friendship, such as a wrestling-themed event at a private hotel that includes an octagon ring, complete with rap entrances and introductions akin to fighters.
Various venues have set up brunches offering stunning views.
Calcutta People's Film Festival showcased short films focused on friendship from regions like Delhi, Hyderabad and West Bengal from 3 pm until 9 00 p.m. The films captured the essence of everyday individuals navigating love, challenge and hope."
