ANANTAPUR: Anantapur Two Town circle inspector Srikanth suffered a serious injury after an accused Ajay Kumar stabbed the CI when a police team tried to nab Srikanth near Akuthotapalli under Itikapapalli police station limits on Monday.
The inspector fired his 9 mm service revolver and injured the knee of the accused to save other members of the arresting party.
Anantapur SP P. Jagadish said that Ajay Kumar, along with his three friends C. Raja, Sohail and Akram had been consuming liquor at a cafe. When Ajay sought additional liquor, Raja refused to pay. This led to Ajay Kumar attacking Raja with a knife, resulting in serious injuries. Raja is battling for life at the Government General Hospital in Anantapur.
Following a complaint by the victim, Two Town police registered a case and began investigations. On Monday, on receipt of information that Ajay Kumar had attacked an auto driver Baba, circle inspector Srikanth and his team rushed to the TV Tower area on the outskirts of Anantapur.
Police found Baba with a knife injury in his stomach. Before being shifted to a hospital, the auto driver informed police about the direction in which Ajay Kumar had fled. Police rushed in that direction and found him near an orchard in Akuthotapalli village.
When the police team surrounded Ajay Kumar, he attacked CI Srikanth and injured the latter’s left hand. The inspector then pulled out his revolver with his right hand and fired on Ajay Kumar, injuring the attacker’s knee.
The police team shifted both CI Srikanth and Ajay Kumar to Anantapur GGH for treatment, where both are out of danger.
