Visakhapatnam: After facing a deficit rainfall of 25 to 50 per cent as of date, the Rayalaseema region is expected to receive above normal rainfall and coastal Andhra Pradesh (18 districts) normal to above normal rainfall during the second half of the southwest monsoon season (August to September), according to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) latest long-range forecast for August-September.
The IMD’s projection places most of Andhra Pradesh in the category likely to receive rainfall above the long-period average during August-September, positioning it with the national trends. For the entire country, the second half of the monsoon season is most likely to receive above normal rainfall.
Andhra Pradesh registered an average of 170.9 mm actual rainfall from June 1 to July 31 against the normal rainfall of 225.2 mm, registering a 24 per cent deficit in rainfall across the state. In coastal Andhra Pradesh (a total of 18 districts and Yanam), the deficit ranges between 15 and 30 per cent.
The IMD report said El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ESNO)-neutral conditions are currently prevailing over the equatorial Pacific region and are expected to continue during the remaining part of the monsoon season. Post-monsoon, weak La Nina conditions may develop.
The IMD forecasts that the Rayalaseema and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) regions in the state are expected to receive above normal rainfall, while below normal rainfall is expected over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP) in the month of August.
