Tirupati district police have arrested four persons in connection with 13 chain-snatching cases and recovered 352 grams of gold ornaments worth ₹57 lakh, besides seizing three motorcycles allegedly used in the offences.
Disclosing the details on Monday, SP L. Subba Rayudu said eight cases were reported under Tiruchanur police station limits, four under Ramachandrapuram and one under Vadamalapeta. The accused allegedly targeted women walking alone and changed motorcycle number plates to evade identification.
Special teams formed to investigate the cases detained three suspects near Daminedu on Monday morning. During questioning, they allegedly confessed to their involvement in the offences, the SP said.
The stolen ornaments were allegedly handed over to Mekala Kishore, a clerk at a pawn shop in Renigunta, who kept them at his residence for resale. Police arrested Kishore and recovered 12 gold chains weighing 352 grams.
The accused were identified as Challa Rajesh (26), Bonda Sivaramakrishna (27), Chittathuru Pawan Kalyan (27) and Mekala Kishore (36), all from villages in Yerpedu and Renigunta mandals.
The SP said the accused allegedly committed the offences to fund their addictions. Police are investigating their possible involvement in other crimes and checking their criminal records.
