28 Students of SV Ayurvedic College Fall Ill After Eating Hostel Food

Students report diarrhoea and stomach pain following meals

Tirupati: As many as 28 students of Sri Venkateswara Ayurvedic Medical College in Tirupati fell ill after consuming ‘contaminated’ food at the boys' and girls' hostels on Monday night.

The students developed diarrhoea, nausea and mild stomach pain and the seriously affected were referred to a hospital. They were discharged after treatment.

The affected students included 20 girls and eight boys. Of them, 17 girls and three boys were shifted by ambulance to the TTD Central Hospital. The remaining students also received medical care.

Students say the quality of food served at the Ayurvedic Medical College hostels was unsafe and that similar problems had occurred earlier.

TTD officials met the affected students and gathered details. They later inspected the kitchen and examined food preparation, storage, distribution, hygiene and quality standards. Samples have been sent for laboratory tests.

TTD joint executive officer Dr A Sharath visited the TTD hospital on Tuesday and interacted with the students and doctors. According to the final medical report, all the students have returned to their hostels, where they resumed regular meals, he said.
