Several Pakistani families visit Visakhapatnam for medical treatment due to low costs here, hospital sources said.

Visakhapatnam: Two Pakistani nationals – a father and son duo - are awaiting central government permission to continue their stay here on their long-term medical visa.

The deadline set by the government for all Pakistanis to exit from the country ends on April 29. The Pakistani’s Muslim wife holds an Indian passport and lives here. They had brought their 10-year-old son for medical treatment at a local hospital.

Sources said the boy, born in Dubai, was suffering from psychiatric problems.

“The letter for his extension of stay has been sent to the foreigners’ regional registration office. A decision would be known by April 29,’’ said city police commissioner Sankabrata Bagchi.

While Saarc visas expire on April 26, medical visas would end on April 29. Visas of all other categories will not be recognised after April 27.

Meanwhile, the city police stepped up vigilance against foreigners by checking lodges, hotels and guest houses to track down suspicious persons. SPs of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam and Anakapalli reported that there was no Pakistani national in their jurisdictions.

DGP Harish Gupta had advised all Pakistani nationals residing in the state to leave by April 27. The order came as a follow-up to the central government decision to revoke all visas issued to Pakistanis, from April 27.
