17 Ships From Kakinada Move Into Deep Sea To Escape Cyclone

KAKINADA: Operations have been suspended at both the Kakinada Anchorage and Deep-Water Port on Monday, as Cyclone Montha is expected to hit the coast around Kakinada.

Authorities have moved 17 ships anchored at the port 200 nautical miles into the sea to escape the impact of the cyclone. Steel barges have been anchored and tied up at the port jetties so keep them safe. No cargo is being handled at the port.

Kakinada-Uppada beach road has been closed. No vehicle or person is allowed on the road as the sea at Uppada is very rough and waves are hitting the road. Holiday has been declared for all government and private educational institutions in the area. A total of 229 rehabilitation centres in Kakinada district and 120 rehabilitation centres in Konaseema district have been kept ready with enough essentials and medicines stocked for seven days.

Food distribution centres have been set up at Uppada, Moolapeta and Konapapapeta. Food packets will be supplied to these centres by the Annavaram Devasthanam, Akshaya Foundation and Alluri Seetharama Raju Foundation.

Rains in all five districts of the region:
Rains have continued throughout the day in the districts of Kakinada, Konaseema, Eluru, and East and West Godavari, though with short spells of respite. However, wind speeds are high with gusts threatening people. Power lines are snapping. Officials are working to restore power supply wherever there is disruption. SDRF and NDRF teams have reached the districts to take up rescue operations.

Special officers and in-charge ministers have arrived in the districts and are reviewing the cyclone situation first hand. Municipal Administration minister Ponguri Narayana is in Kakinada supervising operations in Kakinada district. Special officer of Konaseema district V. Vijaya Rama Raju visited the rehabilitation centre at Kesanapalli village in Konaseema district on Monday and observed the facilities for the evacuees.

Control rooms have been set up in the five districts, while SDRF and NDRF teams have taken up positions in vulnerable areas.
