14 Encroached Houses Demolished At Mandapeta

Fourteen houses on a canal bund in Mandapeta were demolished for Pushkaralu development, triggering protests by YSRC MLC Thota Trimurthulu and party workers.

Tension prevailed in Mandapeta after YSRC MLC Thota Trimurthulu and party workers tried to obstruct municipal authorities from demolishing 14 houses at a canal bund in Mandapeta of East Godavari district on Sunday. Police registered cases against two persons and others.

Municipal commissioner T.V. Ranga Rao said the encroachments were being removed as per government directions as part of development works ahead of Godavari Pushkaralu-2027.

Trimurthulu said the government should provide alternative accommodation before removing the houses. He said the residents had been living there for a long time and alleged that the houses were not obstructing the Pushkaralu works.

When Trimurthulu was speaking to police, an official allegedly dragged him away. Police shifted Trimurthulu to his residence at Venkatayapalem in Ramachandrapuram mandal of Dr B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district. He was later arrested.

Nearly 300 police personnel, including a DSP, CI, SIs and women Home Guards, were deployed at the site.

Trimurthulu alleged that the alliance government was forcibly demolishing houses of poor people in the name of Pushkaralu development. He claimed the houses were not obstructing the programme and alleged that the land was being cleared for 10 acres belonging to Mandapeta MLA Vegulla Jogeswara Rao of the Telugu Desam. He also accused the government of supporting what he called a “Red Book Constitution” and stated that the YSRC would support the affected poor.
