Visakhapatnam: Around 1,200 prisoners, including 82 women inmates, along with 80 prison staff members, participated in yoga sessions at the Central Jail premises as part of the 12th International Day of Yoga on Sunday.

Jail superintendent M. Mahesh Babu said that 800 inmates performed yoga in the open ground, while 400 prisoners, including women inmates, took part in sessions inside the jail barracks.

The programme highlighted the role of yoga in promoting physical fitness, mental well-being and emotional balance.

Addressing the participants, Mr Mahesh Babu said regular yoga practice in prisons plays a vital role in fostering discipline, self-confidence and a positive outlook among inmates. He emphasised that this year's International Day of Yoga theme, "Yoga for Healthy Ageing," serves as an inspiration for people of all ages and encourages the integration of yoga into daily life.

He noted that Visakhapatnam Central Prison regularly organises wellness and rehabilitation programmes aimed at improving the physical and mental health of inmates. The event concluded successfully, with participants gaining greater awareness of the benefits of yoga and its contribution to overall well-being.

"Yoga was introduced in all prisons across Andhra Pradesh six years ago as one of the key rehabilitation programmes, and we have observed positive changes among prisoners since then," the superintendent told this correspondent.
