108 Emergency Service Responds to 7.78 Lakh Calls a Year

Officials said the service has played a vital role in reducing maternal and infant mortality by ensuring timely access to treatment

VIJAYAWADA: The government has significantly strengthened the emergency healthcare infrastructure by modernising the 108 Ambulance Services with advanced technology, enabling faster response times and improved patient care across urban and rural areas.

According to a press release, the upgraded emergency network, operated in partnership with Bhavya Health Care, handled 7,78,799 cases between June 2025 and May 2026. The government said the overhaul was aimed at ensuring timely medical intervention during the critical Golden Hour following accidents and medical emergencies.

The revamped fleet now uses GPS-based vehicle tracking; real-time traffic navigation systems and digitised patient records, helping ambulances reach victims quickly and coordinate treatment with hospitals more effectively.

Among the total emergencies attended during the period, 1,13,764 were road accident cases, while 1,05,786 pregnant women were safely transported to healthcare facilities for maternal care. Officials said the service has played a vital role in reducing maternal and infant mortality by ensuring timely access to treatment.

The ambulance network also managed 97,118 respiratory distress cases, 49,342 injury-related emergencies, 45,951 cardiac cases and 40,553 incidents involving unconscious patients. Other major emergencies included 34,532 abdominal pain cases, 32,858 poisoning incidents, 29,485 seizure episodes, 20,278 stroke cases and 14,007 neonatal emergencies.

Of the total caseload, 2,53,022 patients were shifted through Inter-Facility Transfers (IFT), ensuring continuity of care from primary health centres to tertiary hospitals. Another 5,25,777 cases were non-IFT emergencies requiring immediate field response and evacuation.

The service has also enhanced its specialised cardiac care capabilities. Ambulances are equipped with advanced life support systems, automated external defibrillators and communication technology that allows emergency medical technicians to transmit patient data directly to hospitals while en route.

Bhavya Health Care's media coordinator said the organisation aims to build a comprehensive safety net through predictive technology, continuous EMT training and expansion of advanced life support services. The government, he said, is working to extend emergency coverage to even the remotest parts.

Officials noted that the upgraded 108 service has earned wide appreciation, providing round-the-clock emergency assistance and reassurance to families across Andhra Pradesh.
