Nellore: In a major boost to sustainable development alongside heritage conservation, the Andhra Pradesh government has unveiled plans to set up a 100-acre solar power project in the vicinity of Narasimhakonda, even as it sanctioned Rs 8.74 crore for the comprehensive development of the revered Sri Vedagiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, located within 15 km from Nellore city.
Announcing the initiative on Wednesday, Endowments Minister Anam Ramnarayana Reddy said the solar power project—proposed on endowments department land and implemented with the support of the Nellore Municipal Corporation—will significantly enhance green energy generation and help improve civic services for city residents. All required approvals for the project will be expedited, he assured.
The minister reviewed temple development works on Wednesday after visiting the historic shrine, along with local legislators and senior officials. He stated that the sanctioned Rs 8.74 crore will be taken up on priority and completed within 18 months, aiming to strengthen both the spiritual and tourism potential of the temple.
Highlighting the government’s broader vision, Anam said Nellore district is being developed into a major spiritual hub through the renovation and reconstruction of ancient temples. “Across the district, 57 temples are being developed at a cost of nearly Rs 80 crore,” he noted.
The Vedagiri Narasimha Swamy Temple, which owns about 1,176 acres of land, will play a key role in this dual approach of heritage preservation and renewable energy promotion. The proposed solar project alone will utilise 100 acres, setting an example of how temple lands can contribute to sustainable urban development.
Nellore Rural MLA Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy’s brother and TD leader Kotamreddy Giridhar Reddy thanked the minister for promptly sanctioning funds for the temple’s development. In-charge Mayor P. Roop Kumar Yadav also expressed special gratitude for approving the lease of endowments land for the solar power project, calling it a landmark decision for the city.
The review meeting was attended by Vedagiri Narasimha Swamy Devasthanam chairman Indupuru Achyuth Reddy, commissioner Y.O. Nandan, RDO Anusha, endowments commissioner Janardhan Reddy, temple EO Gopi, and several public representatives and officials.
