Tata Institute of Fundamental Research plans scientific balloons

TIFR will release 10 balloons as part of the project in phases.

Hyderabad: The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) stated that it would release a scientific research balloon later this month that contains hydrogen. In a press statement, TIFR scientist-in-charge B. Suneel Kumar cautioned the public not to handle the balloons if they found them on the ground. “Public should not touch it or tamper with it because the instruments are extremely sensitive and valuable,” he said and added that the police should be informed if the balloon lands on the ground.

Scientists carrying out the experiments collect the instruments. He said those who find it would get a reward. He said the research that began on October 15 last would conclude on May 31. TIFR will release 10 balloons as part of the project in phases, under the auspices of the department of atomic energy and Isro.

He said the balloons are made of twin polyethylene plastic films. The balloons range in diameter from 50 metres to 85 metres and are normally launched between 8 am and 6 pm. The balloons, which carry up scientific instruments for research at high altitudes, are expected to reach heights between 30 km and 42 km.
