Astrophysics vital for info on cosmos, says Prof Thomas Gaisser

He was delivering a public lecture at the Anna stadium here organised by the Cosmic Ray Laboratory (CRL).

Ooty: “Astrophysical particles are the messengers from outer space which come with some kind information of the astrophysical world to further enrich human understanding of space, as exploration to understand the basics in space or cosmos will be ever continuing to provide the information for applied science in future,” said Prof. Thomas K. Gaisser, a veteran researcher in astro-particle physics research from the University of Delaware, USA.

He was delivering a public lecture at the Anna stadium here organised by the Cosmic Ray Laboratory (CRL) of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research here on Wednesday. Explaining in length about the astrophysical particles and cosmic ray research, which is little over a century old now, Prof Gaisser said that astrophysical research is an ever interesting filed of cosmic rays research that tells the story of the visible universe. Secondly, the cosmic ray protons and nuclei teach mankind about the earth’s environment in solar neighborhood and how they are produced in distant sources, including supernova explosions and accretion of matter onto black holes, he said.

“Third most recent messenger from space is the neutrino, which interacts only by weak force and reach us from cosmological distances, but are difficult to detect”, he added.
