Reports are misleading, say KFRI scientists

The statements by persons sitting in responsible positions would only undermine these efforts, said Dr. Sajeev.

Kochi: A team of scientists working in the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) engaged in the eradication of the African giant snail (Achatina fulica) has rubbished a report that appeared in the media stating that the invasive species was harmless and its meat edible and had export potential. The report quoting some scientists of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) and Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) was misleading and baseless, they said.

The Asia-Pacific Forest Invasive Species Network (APFISN) Secretariat located at KFRI stated that it was not safe to consume the giant African snail due to the presence of a nematode parasite causing meningitis amongst human beings. “Only top referral hospitals in the state have the facility to detect the meningitis caused by nematode in the giant African snail”, Dr. TV Sajeev, part of the scientific team engaged in combating the menace, said.

The statement also said the projection of export potential was misleading as the snail belonged to one of the 100 worst invasive species in the world and placed under stringent quarantine regulations to prevent its transport.

The statement also said that anyone seeking any clarifications on the best practices regarding the Giant African Snail should write to africansnailkerala@gmail.com or call 0487 2690222. The efforts to manage the menace have reached a critical stage with the joint efforts of many local self-help groups, agriculture department, Kudumbashree units, Asha workers and general public, the statement.

The statements by persons sitting in responsible positions would only undermine these efforts, said Dr. Sajeev.
